God has shown his love for the whole world by giving us Jesus as our Savior.

SCRIPTURE VERSE FOR THIS WEEK
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 (NIV)

A Prayer for the Week:God, thank you for showing us your great love through Jesus. Make our lives signs of your love to those around us. Amen.

Mealtime Prayer:
Lord God, thank you for these gifts before us, signs of your great love. As we are filled with food, fill us also with love for others. Amen.

A Blessing to Give:
May the Lord watch over your life and keep you from all harm. May he keep you safe in your coming and your going, now and always. Amen. (Psalm 121:7-8)

CARING CONVERSATIONS
Discuss in your household or small group:
• What makes you feel loved?
• What has God done to show his love for us? What does it mean to you that God loves you?
• How is God’s love like human love? How is it different?

DEVOTIONS
God loves the world, the whole world! Find a world map or a globe. In your home devotional times this week, share what you know about different parts of the world. Each day, pray for the people in a different part of the world, that they would know God’s love, and come to know and follow Jesus as their Savior.

SERVICE
The Old Testament Lectionary Reading for Sunday, March 16th tells of how God called Abram to leave his home country and his relatives to live in a new land (Genesis 12:1). In our world today, there are many people who are forced out of their home countries by war or other hardships. Visit the websites www.refugeesinternational.org and www.unhcr.org to find out more about displaced people. Talk about the challenges and difficulties facing refugees. Plan to make a donation to an organization, like the Red Cross, that works to assist refugees.

RITUALS AND TRADITIONS
When speaking to Nicodemus, Jesus said that he would be “lifted up” just as “Moses lifted up the snake in the desert” (John 3:14; see also Numbers 21:4-9). For this week’s symbol, wrap a pipe cleaner, representing the bronze snake, around a wooden stick, representing the cross of Christ. Say this prayer together:
Heavenly Father, your Son Jesus was lifted up on a cross to save us from the sickness of sin. Thank you for your great love for the whole world! Amen.

SCRIPTURE VERSE FOR THIS WEEK
“People do not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” Matthew 4:4 (TNIV)

SAY, PRAY AND BLESS:

A Prayer for the Week:
Lord God, give us a hunger for your Word, the Bread of Life. Amen. (Matthew 4:4)

Mealtime Prayer:
Loving God, thank you for giving us daily bread. Make us hungry not only for food, but for your Word, the true source of life. Amen.

A Blessing to Give:
May the Lord Jesus bring you peace when you are afraid. May you listen to him and look to him, now and always. Amen. (Matthew 17:5-6)

CARING CONVERSATIONS
Discuss in your household or small group:
• Share about a time when you felt tempted in some way.
• How was Jesus tempted by the Devil in the desert? How did he
respond?
• What can we do as Christians to help resist temptation? What can we
learn from Jesus’ responses?

DEVOTIONS
Jesus says that our life depends not only on eating food, but on every word that God speaks. This week, connect God’s word with your bodily eating by beginning each meal with a short Bible reading. Ask those in your household to choose a favorite Bible verse to be read on a particular day of the week. If possible, display these verses on placemats for all your household to see.

SERVICE
Genesis 2:15 says that God put Adam in the Garden of Eden to “work it and take care of it.” Volunteer some time as a household to assist a neighbor with their gardening or outside cleaning, or help maintain your church grounds or a local recreation area.

RITUALS AND TRADITIONS
The season of Lent begins with Jesus in the wilderness and journeys toward the cross and the tomb. Make up a “wilderness box” as a Lenten feature for your meal table or home devotional area. Line the inside of a shoebox with plastic. Fill most of the box with soil and then put a layer of sand over the top. For each week of Lent, you will be able to add a different symbol to the box. This week, add some small stones to symbolize Jesus’ temptation to turn stones into bread. Say this prayer together:
Lord Jesus, when you were tempted in the wilderness you did not give in. Please help us to be strong when we are tempted. Thank you for going all the way to the cross for us. Amen.

God is ready to show us mercy

SCRIPTURE VERSE FOR THIS WEEK
“Come back to the Lord your God, because he is kind and shows mercy. He doesn’t become angry quickly, and he has great love.”
Joel 2:13 (NCV)

SAY, PRAY AND BLESS:

A Prayer for Ash Wednesday:
Lord Jesus, help us to treasure you in our hearts today. Amen.
(Matthew 6:21)

Mealtime Prayer:
We thank you, God, for all your love, your mercy and your grace; for home and kin and food upon our plates. Amen.

A Blessing to Give:
May you know God’s mercy and never-ending love. May he give you a pure heart and a willing spirit. Amen. (Psalm 51:1,10,12)

CARING CONVERSATIONS
Discuss in your household or small group:
• Share about a time when you felt badly about something you had said,
thought or done.
• God invites us to bring all our wrongs to him, promising that he will
forgive us. What has he done to make that possible?
• How do you feel about God’s mercy? What difference has it made in your life?

DEVOTIONS
Fasting (going without food) is a traditional Lenten practice. Jesus speaks of fasting in Matthew 6:16-19. Choose to forgo a household meal on one day of this week. Gather instead to listen to a reading of Psalm 51. Talk about what this Psalm says and how it applies to your lives.

SERVICE
Consider giving up a household treat food or activity for Lent. Put aside the amount of money saved by doing so. Decide on a charitable cause and donate the money at the end of Lent.

RITUALS AND TRADITIONS
Traditionally, Christians receive ashes on their heads on this day as a reminder of their mortality and a sign of sorrow for sin. This Wednesday have a small Ash Wednesday observance in your home. Prepare in advance a small bowl of ashes to use.
Leader: God’s Word tells us that our earthen bodies will one day return to dust (Genesis 3:19). But, Jesus Christ saves us from sin (Romans 8:11). As Lent begins today, let us pray for faith in him.
Prayer: Lord God, as the season of Lent begins today, we confess our need for a Savior. Help us to trust and follow Jesus. Amen.
Take turns making the sign of the cross with ashes on one another’s foreheads, saying these words: “Repent and look to Jesus your Savior, for dust you are, and to dust you shall return.”
Leader: God remembers that we are dust and has compassion for us. The Lord’s love is with those who worship him. Go in peace. Amen.

Jesus is the Son of God… listen to him!

SCRIPTURE VERSE FOR THIS WEEK
While Peter was still speaking, a bright cloud surrounded them. A voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, and I love him. I am very pleased with him. Listen to him!” Matthew 17:5 (NIRV)

SAY, PRAY AND BLESS:
A Prayer for the Week:
Lord, help us to pay attention to your Word so that faith shines forth from our hearts. Amen. (2 Peter 1:19)

Mealtime Prayer:
God, our provider, you are full of love and full of might. May we shine for you with faith so bright. Amen.

A Blessing to Give:
May the Lord Jesus bring you peace when you are afraid. May you listen to him and look to him, now and always. Amen. (Matthew 17:5-6)

CARING CONVERSATIONS
Discuss in your household or small group:
• Are you a good listener? What is involved in listening carefully to others?
• The voice from heaven said, “Listen to him.” In what ways do you listen to Jesus?
• What helps you to listen to Jesus? What stops you from listening?

DEVOTIONS
March 5th is Ash Wednesday, the first of the 40 days of Lent. Traditionally, Christians receive ashes on their heads on this day as a reminder of their mortality and a sign of sorrow for sin. Have a small Ash Wednesday observance in your home.
Amen.

SERVICE
Consider giving up a household treat, food or activity for Lent. Each week, put aside the amount of money saved by doing so. Decide on a charitable cause and donate the money at the end of Lent.

RITUALS AND TRADITIONS
The day before Ash Wednesday is called Shrove Tuesday. The name “shrove” comes from the practice of being “shriven”—going to church to confess your sins and receive absolution before the start of Lent. Shrove Tuesday is also sometimes called Pancake Tuesday or Fat Tuesday because households used up their remaining eggs and fats before Lent by making pancakes on this day. Have a Shrove Tuesday pancake breakfast or dinner. As you eat, talk about what Jesus gave up for our sake, and what you could give up during Lent to prepare spiritually for Easter.

Show love to those who are unkind to you and pray for them.

SCRIPTURE VERSE FOR THIS WEEK
You have heard people say, “Love your neighbors and hate your enemies.” But I tell you to love your enemies and pray for anyone who mistreats you. Matthew 5:43-44 (CEV)

SAY, PRAY AND BLESS:
A Prayer for the Week:
Jesus, thank you that your love for us never fails. Help us to show love to others today, even when they hurt us. Amen.

Mealtime Prayer:
Gracious Father, thank you for your loving care. Be with us as this meal we share. May your love be known everywhere. Amen.

A Blessing to Give:
May the Spirit of God live in you. May the Spirit fill you with God’s love and God’s wisdom. Amen. (1 Corinthians 3:16-20)

CARING CONVERSATIONS
Discuss in your household or small group:
• When do you find it easy to show love? When is it hard to show love?
• Jesus tells us that we should not only love those who love us, but love
those who treat us badly and pray for them. How can we show love for
our “enemies?”
• How does Jesus show love for those who don’t love him?

DEVOTIONS
In our world today, there are many people who actively oppose the Christian faith, sometimes with violence and acts of terror. Jesus commands us not to repay evil with evil, but to love our enemies and pray for them. In your home devotion times this week, pray for opponents of the Christian faith. Ask God to bless them with good things and to give them a new heart and new spirit. Ask God to help you see them through his eyes, and to teach you how to love them.

SERVICE
In Leviticus 19:9-10, God asked the Israelites to be generous to poor people and to the foreigners who were living among them. When they harvested their crops, they were to leave behind some of the produce for these people to collect. Discuss how your household might better share God’s blessings with the poor in your community. For example, could you purchase an extra food item or two when grocery shopping to donate to a local charity that helps the poor?

RITUALS AND TRADITIONS
Intentional quality time together is a very important building block for a healthy household. Regular household outings are one way of providing time, space and the means for household members to maintain and develop their relationships with one another. With foresight and planning, household outings can also have spiritual elements that help foster your relationships with God. For a household outing this week, search out old buildings in your community. Look for foundation stones that indicate when they were constructed. As you go, talk about what it means to have Jesus Christ as the foundation for your lives (1 Corinthians 3:11).

DAILY BIBLE READINGS
These readings are related to the Lectionary readings for this Sunday.
We invite you to take time each day to read the assigned
Bible passages.

Saturday Proverbs 16:1-8 Living God’s way
Sunday Matthew 17:1-9 Jesus shines on a mountain

Sunday, February 16, 2014

God’s way is the best way to live.

SCRIPTURE VERSE FOR THIS WEEK
“Choose life! Be completely faithful to the Lord your God, love God, and do whatever the Lord tells you.” Deuteronomy 30:19-20 (CEV)

SAY, PRAY AND BLESS:
A Prayer for the Week:
Lord, help us to grow in our faith, so that our beliefs are matched by our actions. Amen. (1 Corinthians 3:1-3)

Mealtime Prayer:
Lord, we thank you for this day of life, for food to eat and gifts to use. May your commands we treasure and your ways we choose. Amen.

A Blessing to Give:
May God be the center of your life. May you be filled with love and listen to God’s voice. Amen. (Deuteronomy 30:20)

CARING CONVERSATIONS
Discuss in your household or small group:
• Is it good or bad to have rules and laws? Explain your answer.
• Why does God give us laws to follow?
• How do we benefit when we follow God’s commands or laws?

DEVOTIONS
Jesus says that if we know that someone is upset or angry with us, we should deal with it as soon as we can by going and sorting things out with them. Often this may involve listening, confessing, apologizing and forgiving. In your home devotional times this week, talk about how your household deals with conflict. Set some ground rules for peaceful conversation, and invite household members to share with one another any hurts or grievances they have. Pray for God’s help to deal with your conflicts in healthier ways.

SERVICE
Without law and order in society, our lives would be absolute chaos. Law and order are good gifts from God to us. Plan an “appreciation visit” to your local police station. Prepare cookies or other treats to give to police officers as a thank you for their services to your household and community. Pray for God’s ongoing protection and blessings for them.

RITUALS AND TRADITIONS
In 1 Corinthians 3:1-7, Paul talks to the Christians in Corinth about their spiritual growth. It was God’s plan for them to grow in understanding and practice of the Christian faith—and God has the same hope and desire for us. Plan a household retreat time to talk about your spiritual growth. Discuss the things that have helped you grow spiritually in the past, where you feel you are now in your spiritual lives, and actions you can take to help you grow spiritually in the coming year. Pray for God’s help and guidance. Keep a record of your conversation, and place a list of any resolutions you have made in a prominent place in your home. Make this exercise an annual event for your household.

Jesus calls us to live as salt and as light for him.

“Make your light shine, so that others will see the good that you do and will praise your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:16 (CEV)

A Prayer for the Week:
Lord God, be our light when darkness surrounds us. Shine over us, in us, and through us. Amen. (Psalm 112:4)

Mealtime Prayer:
Jesus our Savior, thank you for this food, so full of flavor. Jesus our Light, may we shine for you, with love so bright. Amen.

A Blessing to Give:
May God’s love shine through you, so that others see God’s goodness and offer praise to the Lord. Amen.

CARING CONVERSATIONS
Discuss in your household or small group:
• What is your favorite salty food?
• Jesus calls his followers the “salt of the earth” (Matthew 5:13). What do
you think he means by this?
• Like salt flavors food, Christians “flavor” the lives of others by the way
we live. Share some examples from your own experience.

DEVOTIONS
Share some salty foods during your home devotional times this week (e.g. salted potato chips). As you snack, discuss ways in which other Christians have “flavored” your lives with the love of Jesus, and ways in which you can flavor the lives of others (look up Isaiah 58:6-7,9b-10 for some ideas). Pour some salt into small containers to carry with you during the week as a reminder to be salty for Jesus!

SERVICE
In 1 Corinthians 2:3, the apostle Paul says that when he first visited the Christians in Corinth he came in “weakness and fear, and with much trembling.” Pastors and other church workers may seem composed on the outside, but often they feel inadequate in their work. Write a note of encouragement to your pastor or a staff member of your church. Let them know that you appreciate them, and tell them how God is using them as a light in your lives.

RITUALS AND TRADITIONS
Find a candle for each member of your household. Finish your mealtimes this week with a brief candle lighting ritual. Light one another’s candles in turn either by using matches or passing a flame from candle to candle. As each person’s candle is lit, have other household members say to them this week’s Blessing to Give: “May God’s love shine through you, so that others see God’s goodness and offer praise to the Lord. Amen.” As an additional reminder to do good for Jesus this week, set up piles of salt to mark the path from the front door of your home out into the wider world.

DAILY BIBLE READINGS
These readings are related to the Lectionary readings for this Sunday.
We invite you to take time each day to read the assigned
Bible passages.

Friday 1 Thessalonians 5:5-11 You are children of the light
Saturday Psalm 36:5-9 In your light we see light
Sunday Matthew 5:21-37 Teachings of Jesus

Sunday, February 2, 2014

Jesus is a light for all people.

“I have seen your salvation, which you have prepared for all people. He is a light to reveal God to the nations, and he is the glory of your people Israel!” Luke 2:30-32 (NLT)

A Prayer for the Week:
Jesus, please light our way today. Shine your love and grace on us. Amen.

Mealtime Prayer:
Blessed are you, O God, creator of light, giver of life, and savior of nations. All glory to you! Amen.

A Blessing to Give:
May God bless you with peace, light your way, and open your eyes to see his love. Amen. (Luke 2:29-31)

CARING CONVERSATIONS
Discuss in your household or small group:
• Share stories from your early childhood.
• When Joseph and Mary brought baby Jesus to the temple, they were
met by Simeon and Anna. What did Simeon and Anna say and do? How
do you think Mary and Joseph felt?
• What elderly people have encouraged you in your Christian faith
through their words or actions?

DEVOTIONS
Luke 2:40 tells us that “the child, Jesus, grew and became strong. He was filled with wisdom and was blessed by God’s grace.” In your home devotion times this week, make body figures out of modeling clay. As you do, talk about what it means to grow in body, mind and spirit as a child of God. How does God want us to use our bodies and minds? What does it mean to be “blessed by God’s grace” as we grow? Say a prayer of thanks to God for all the ways we grow.

SERVICE
Plan an act of service to support or encourage a parent or parents of young children in your congregation or neighborhood. For example, prepare a meal for their household or provide childcare for them.

RITUALS AND TRADITIONS
February 2nd has long been celebrated as “Candlemas” by Christians. When the infant Jesus was brought to the temple by Mary and Joseph, Simeon called him “a light to reveal God to the nations.” Before electricity was discovered, homes were lit with candles. Traditionally, Christians brought their candles to church on this day to be blessed. Gather all the candles in your home in one room and light them from one central candle. Place one in each window and others around your home. (Make sure to be safe and watch them carefully!) Turn off other lights. Say together the “Scripture Verse for this Week,” and say a prayer of thanks to Jesus for coming as the light of
the world.

Sunday, January 26, 2014

Jesus lights our way, calling us to follow him.

“Come. Follow me,” Jesus said. “I will make you fishers of people.” Matthew 4:19 (NIRV)

A Prayer for the Week:
Lord Jesus, thank you for choosing us to follow you. Teach us how to fish for people. Amen. (Matthew 4:19)

Mealtime Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank you for the drinks we sip and the food we swallow. Please give us strength to serve and faith to follow. Amen.

A Blessing to Give:
May Jesus give you a heart that seeks him and feet that are ready to follow him. Amen. (Matthew 4:18-20; Psalm 27:8)

CARING CONVERSATIONS
Discuss in your household or small group:
• Share about a time when there was a big change in your life.
• When Jesus called Andrew, Simon, James and John to follow him, they
immediately left their work as fishermen to follow him (Matthew 4:18,
21). Why do you think they did this? How do you think they felt?
• In what ways has following Jesus changed your life?

DEVOTIONS
Set up a collection of tea candles on a table or a bench in your home. During your devotion times this week, read Matthew 4:16. Invite each person to share ways in which they have experienced Jesus as their “great light” during the day or week. Each time, light a candle and say these words: “Jesus our light, thank you for shining on us.”

SERVICE
In Psalm 27, we hear King David expressing his heartfelt desire to worship God in the temple all the days of his life (Psalm 27:4). The way we care for our places of worship reflects our appreciation for God and for the gifts he gives us in worship. Commit as a household to an act of service to improve the state of your church facility (e.g. gardening, window cleaning, painting, etc.). Make arrangements to do this.

RITUALS AND TRADITIONS
Jesus calls all his followers to “fish for people.” One way we do so is through prayer—by praying for specific people that don’t as yet know Jesus, and for specific missionaries and mission activities. Hang a string or a cord between two points in your home and attach small hooks to it. Cut out paper fish shapes and write the name of a person or mission for whom your household can pray on each one. Attach the “fish” to the hooks and use your “fishing line” as a visible reminder to pray.

Jesus is the Lamb of God, who takes away our sins.

The next day, John saw Jesus coming toward him. John said, “Look! The Lamb of God! He takes away the sin of the world!” John 1:29 (NIRV)

A Prayer for the Week:
God, you have done many wonderful things for us. None can compare with you! Amen. (Psalm 40:5)

Mealtime Prayer:
God of love and God of grace, here we come to you in praise. Bless this meal, and may we be people who serve you faithfully. Amen.

A Blessing to Give:
May you be led to see and know Jesus. May you confess him as the Son of God. Amen. (John 1:34,42)

CARING CONVERSATIONS
Discuss in your household or small group:
• Have you ever been given a nickname? Why were you called that?
• Why do you think Jesus was called the “Lamb of God” by John the
Baptist?
• What different names or titles do you use for Jesus? Which is your
favorite and why?

DEVOTIONS
When John the Baptist saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!” While we cannot physically see Jesus, there are signs of his life all around us. Cut out the shape of a lamb from a large sheet of white paper. In your home devotion times this week, share ways in which you have seen or experienced the presence of Jesus during the day. Write these onto your “lamb.” Conclude by saying together these words: “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world.”

SERVICE
In John 1, we hear that John the Baptist pointed two of his disciples to Jesus. They followed Jesus and spent the day with him (John 1:37-39). Andrew, in turn, introduced his brother, Simon Peter, to Jesus. Is there an individual or household you could invite to spend a Sunday with you – perhaps to come to your church and then for a midday meal? Prepare to invite them and to offer your hospitality.

RITUALS AND TRADITIONS
Purchase a portion of lamb to share in a household meal this week. As you eat, talk about the lamb as a symbol for Jesus. Look up one or more of the Bible passages listed in this week’s “Daily Bible Readings” and talk about their connections to the image of Jesus as the “Lamb of God.”
